Family Programs at the National Gallery of Art are based on a philosophy of slowing down, focusing on one work of art, developing observation and thinking skills, inspiring curiosity and wonder, and fostering collaboration between children and adults. Many of the programs are age-specific, while others are designed for a broader age range. Please note that some programs require advance registration while others have onsite sign-in on the date of the program. All Family Programs are free, and participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Standing next to it just as confidently on a recent weekday was the artist, 17-year-old Nhu Vo, of Randolph High School. She is one of nine teenage art interns at the library who created work for the new Randolph Teen Art Gallery, an idea Young Adult Librarian Melissa Bennett came up with while brainstorming how to better connect with teens.
In February, Bennett gathered the nine teen artists and invited local artist Jamaal Eversley to be their mentor. Bennett provided each student with a theme for their artwork, and students are free to create whatever they like based on the theme.
Bennett created the gallery in part to expand her Teen Lit subscription box, a monthly service she launched last year. Through the free service, she puts together boxes containing a book, candy and a gift for each teen who has subscribed. She has 32 subscribers.
The works created for the gallery will be used in different ways as part of the subscription box until February 2023. Luu's work, for example, will be featured on a planner and sent to the subscribers in the new year, which she said fits her art's theme of hopefulness. Other artworks will be printed on items such as beach towels and puzzles.
Thank you for your interest in foster care and adoption in North Carolina. NC Kids can help you get started and assist with fostering or adoption. There is an incredible need in our state for qualified and dedicated foster and adoptive parents. When children enter foster care the primary goal is to help families resolve their challenges and reunite safely. However, when that is not achieved children can become free for adoption. For more information about how children enter foster care and the requirements for becoming a licensed foster parent please view the Foster Parent Orientation video.

Our Mission is to successfully engage children and families to ensure safety, strengthen families, and achieve permanency. Our vision is to see children thriving in family environments free from abuse and neglect.
When children are not able to safely live with their biological family, the Department of Child Safety may become involved and place the child in foster care. Foster care is only a temporary living arrangement for the child, while the children's parents work to remedy the unsafe situation. The activities and changes that the parents need to complete to have their children returned is called a case plan. You may hear "the case plan is reunification" when the goal is to reunite the children with their parents. If the parents are not able to remedy an unsafe situation and the children cannot return home, the case plan goal may change to adoption. In this case, the court terminates the rights of the parents and the child is said to be "free for adoption." Most children who become free for adoption are adopted either by a member of their extended family or by their foster parents.
Public tours are free for members or with Gallery admission. Pre-registration is no longer required. Visitors can join a tour anytime throughout the session with Gallery admission.
